A Message from Father Barbee

St. Joseph a Pot of Gold

Recently St. Joseph Facebook page posted a picture of a rainbow stretching across Monroe St. and landing on St. Joseph. It is a beautiful picture. The headline accompanying the picture read, “St. Joseph’s Parish community is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Photo credit goes to the Curry family.”

I think the comment is absolutely true. Let me explain. St. Lawrence (225 – 258 AD) was one of seven deacons in Rome who were martyred in the persecutions of Christians which Emperor Valerian ordered in 258 AD. Let’s see what happened.

As deacon, Lawrence was charged with the responsibility for the material goods of the Church, and the distribution of alms to the poor. Lawrence, knowing he would be arrested gave the poor all the funds of which he was in charge and even sold the sacred vessels to increase the fund. When ordered by the Prefect of Rome to turn over the treasures of the Church, he asked for time to set things in order and make an inventory.

Three days later Lawrence gathered a number of blind, lame, maimed, leprous, orphaned, and widows. When the prefect arrived, Lawrence simply said, “These are the treasure of the Church.” It is in this spirit I believe the rainbow falls on St. Joseph.
